In 2004 Filmtec was involved in designing and fabricating a horizonal tracking and vertical lifting stairway. This automated stairway was used in part of the Louis Vuitton 150th birthday party celebration which toured various locations worldwide. The show included a twenty minute multimedia show blending live performance with surreal video on a enormous high-tech projection screen. This stairway was built to link the live and video action.
Segway
After riding a Segway E Model in 2003, Hamish McIntyre thought it had possiblities as a camera support vehicle. The factory model relied on hand control for operation, but this excluded it from film work. Filmtec was involved in developing a new steering and control system for the Segway, allowing the operator to work hands-free. The standard bars were replaced with a seat-post that used lean and rotation as a means of controlling the machine.
While still in its infancy, the Segway has worked on two motion picture projects; Eagle vs Shark(2006), and Out of the Blue(2006).
Looking to the future, a mark two version will offer the operator absolute control, where balance and intuition are the primary operating concerns.
